HIGA: International Meeting of Young Speakers of minoritised Languages 2025

From July 14 to 18, 2025, the fifth edition of the International Meeting of Young Speakers of minoritised Languages (HIGA) was held in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was organized by the HIGA Young Speakers of minoritised Languages Association, with the support of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council and במסגרת the Summer Courses (UIK) program of the University of the Basque Country (EHU).

Since its creation in 2011, HIGA has become a well-established and leading space for young people, where participants from different language communities have the opportunity to engage in training, networking, and exchange, combining academic, cultural, and collective creative activities.

In the 2025 edition, 100 young people took part (80 participants and 20 volunteers and organizers), representing 69 minoritised languages from five continents. In addition, the HIGA project was awarded the Linguapax International Award 2024, in recognition of its trajectory and contributions.

Furthermore, a key collaboration was initiated with HIGA organizers to complete the international diagnosis of the first axis of the BIHAR project. This collaboration made it possible to organize focus groups in which HIGA participants shared reflections and contributions on elements of language revitalization discourses. This meeting has been incorporated into the first axis of BIHAR, led by the Sociolinguistics Cluster, and the data gathered has been used in the diagnosis.
