Anthough the BIHAR project is designed with the future in mind, it is essential to look back and acknowledge the experience and learning accumulated along the way. Indeed, it is a project that has been built step by step over the years, and one of the most significant milestones in its trajectory was the summer course held in July 2023.<\/p>\n
The course titled \u201cMinority languages in a globalized context: why? for what purpose?\u201d addressed a central question: how can we confront the loss of minority languages in an increasingly globalized world? From this reflection, the aim was to develop a wider and more robust discourse in favor of Basque and other minority languages, from both local and international perspectives. Participants had the opportunity to analyze the key factors of language revitalization, drawing on experiences from the Basque Country as well as examples from many other parts of the world.<\/p>\n
The knowledge and debates generated during that course were captured by Xan Aire Hasket in an article published in issue 129 of BAT Aldizkaria: Hizkuntza gutxituak globalizazio testuinguruan: kontakizunak biziberritzeko izpia\u201d The text brings together the voices of language communities from around the world, based on contributions from experts coming from the Americas, Africa, and Europe.<\/p>\n
The article highlights that the situation of minority languages is not isolated, but rather a shared challenge. Under the influence of globalization, many communities experience a similar sense of crisis: loss of speakers, reduction in domains of use, and uncertainty about the future. However, alongside this bleak picture, a thread of hope also emerges.
\nIndeed, those gathered at the course did not only share the problem; they also envisioned a collective utopia for the future. They emphasized the need to understand language revitalization from a social perspective, placing the community at the center and strengthening networks of collaboration.
