The methodology for measuring language use in the street through observation has been used in Basque sociolinguistics since the 1980s. Since then, it has undergone significant methodological development and has had important practical applications, especially through the Basque Street Measurement of Language Use.<\/p>\n
This methodology is based on direct observation: analyzing conversations that take place in the street in order to measure real language use.<\/p>\n
In 2013, with the support of the NPLD network, Soziolinguistika Klusterra published a methodological guide for measuring language use through observation, in Basque and English, with the aim of spreading the methodology both in the Basque Country and internationally. Since then, it has been presented at various meetings and academic forums.<\/p>\n
Between 2024 and 2025, Soziolinguistika Klusterra carried out its first experience of conducting a street language measurement abroad. The measurement of language use in Wales was not an isolated exercise, but rather an experience situated within a specific sociolinguistic context. The measurement was carried out in two towns on the island of Ynys M\u00f4n, where Welsh has historically had a strong presence, but where concern about its use has increased in recent years.<\/p>\n
In this context, the need to measure the social use of the language was evident, which is why it was decided to apply the street measurement methodology developed in the case of Basque.
